Three Sisters

In a big house, in a small town, three sisters wait. They wait for the right time to leave. They wait for the love they deserve. They wait for their lives to begin. And while they wait, the world turns.

This enduring Chekhov classic is given a contemporary Irish take by award-winning playwright Ciara Elizabeth Smyth — an examination of nostalgia, purpose and the cyclical nature of history, with a sharp twist of humour. Commissioned by Sugarglass in 2023 and premiered at the Gaiety Theatre as part of Dublin Theatre Festival 2025.

The production was seen by over 7,200 people across seven sold-out performances, split evenly between the commercial audience of the Gaiety Theatre and the contemporary theatre audience of Dublin Theatre Festival.

The world is draped on three sides around a hardwood platform, with a large table and bentwood chairs moved continually by the performers. Between the third and fourth acts a kabuki drop releases the perimeter drapes and the architecture of the host venue becomes part of the world. A full technical rider is available on request.
